Mini baccarat: small table, same shoe

By · updated October 8, 2026

Mini baccarat is the full game on a blackjack-sized table: one dealer turns every card, nobody squeezes, limits start lower and hands come faster. The odds per hand do not move. What moves is how many hands you play in an hour, and that is what sets the bill.

Mini vs big tableCost per hourOnline versions

Mini baccarat is not a different game. It is the same punto banco, with the same eight-deck shoe and the same third-card table, moved onto a small half-moon layout and run by a single dealer. The casino guides we read agree on one line: at the mini table the dealer turns over all the cards. You bet, you watch, you get paid. Everything that makes the big table slow, the shoe passing between players and the long squeeze, is gone.

Three tables, one game

Casinos run baccarat in three sizes. The names vary by venue; the pattern does not.

Two details are worth reading twice. At midi, the right to handle the cards goes to the biggest bet on each side, so a small bettor watches someone else squeeze the hand they backed. At the mini table that never happens: the rules we read for Maryland casinos say players may not touch, handle or alter any card.

How a mini baccarat round runs

  1. Bets go down on banker, player, tie and any side bet the table offers.
  2. The dealer calls no more bets and draws four cards: first and third to player, second and fourth to banker.
  3. The dealer turns them face up. A total of 8 or 9 on either hand is a natural, and the round ends there.
  4. Third cards follow the fixed table. Player draws on 0 to 5. Banker's draw depends on its total and on player's third card. Nobody at the table makes a choice. The full chart is on our baccarat rules page.
  5. The dealer settles: losing bets first, then winners. Banker wins pay even money less 5% commission, player pays even money, tie pays 8 to 1.

That is the whole round. With no cards to pass and no reveal to wait for, a hand takes a fraction of the time it takes at a big table.

The odds do not shrink with the table

Because the shoe and the draw rules are identical, so is the maths. These are the standard eight-deck figures, and they apply at mini, midi and the big table alike.

BetPaysHouse edge per hand
Banker1 to 1 less 5% commission1.06%
Player1 to 11.24%
Tie8 to 114.36%

If a table changes the payout, for example a no-commission rule, the edge changes with it, whatever size the table is. See no-commission baccarat for how that shifts banker and player.

Pace, not rules, sets the bill

Expected cost per hour is a simple product: stake × hands an hour × house edge. The stake and the edge are yours to choose. The hands an hour come with the table.

How many hands? Bill Zender, writing for a gaming-industry magazine, estimates 50 to 60 decisions an hour for mini baccarat and 35 to 50 for squeeze games, assuming a shuffle machine or pre-shuffled cards. For online tables we use the figures from our other pages and one assumption of our own. Every pace below is an estimate, not a measurement.

Table (pace is our assumption)Hands an hour$25 on banker$25 on player
Big table with squeeze40$10.60$12.40
Mini, land-based55$14.58$17.05
Live studio, standard70$18.55$21.70
Live studio, speed130$34.45$40.30
RNG table, clicking steadily200$53.00$62.00

Read the banker column top to bottom. The rules are the same in every row, and the hourly cost still rises five times over. The only thing that changed is the number of bets. A mini table costs about 38% more an hour than a squeeze table at the same stake, for no reason other than speed.

Lower limits: the other half of the bill

Speed pushes the hourly cost up. Low minimums pull it down, because they let you bet less per hand. The two effects meet differently at each table.

Table and stake (our examples)Hands an hourStakedExpected cost on banker
Big table, $100 minimum40$4,000$42.40
Mini, $10 a hand55$550$5.83
RNG, $10 a hand200$2,000$21.20
RNG, $1 a hand200$200$2.12

The small table is cheap when the small minimum is used. Carry a big-table stake to a fast online table and the hour costs more than the big table ever did. To fix a budget, turn the formula around: stake = the hourly cost you accept ÷ (hands an hour × edge). For $10 an hour on banker at 55 hands: $10 ÷ (55 × 1.06%) ≈ $17 a hand.

Mini baccarat online: RNG tables and live studios

Online, almost every baccarat table is a mini table in spirit. Nobody at home touches a card.

  • RNG tables. Software deals and turns the cards. There is no dealer and no timer; the next hand starts when you press deal. The pace is yours, which is why the 200-hand row above is possible and why it is the expensive one.
  • Live studios. A dealer deals from a real shoe on camera and turns every card, exactly like a land mini table, with a timed betting window. Our live baccarat page covers how the round and the scoreboards work. Faster versions cut the window further; see speed baccarat.
  • Squeeze tables online. Some studios reveal cards slowly, corner by corner. That brings back the big-table pace, and with it a lower hourly cost at the same stake.

Whatever the format, the table's info screen lists the payouts and the side bets. That screen, not the table name, tells you whether you are at a classic 5% commission game.

On a phone

On a small screen a mini-style table is easy to follow: the betting grid sits under the video or the virtual felt, and the result is settled the moment the dealer or the software turns the last card. The risk on a phone is the same one the pace table shows. A thumb can bet a hand every few seconds at an RNG table. Set the stake before you start, not between hands. Our baccarat app guide covers the phone side in more detail.

Mistakes at the mini table

  1. Keeping the big-table stake. At mini pace the same chip costs more per hour. Size the stake to the table, not to habit.
  2. Treating the tie as a small extra. A $5 tie on every hand at 55 hands is $275 staked at 14.36%: about $39.49 an hour, more than the $14.58 the $25 banker bet costs. See the tie bet page.
  3. Assuming a side bet pays the same everywhere. Two casinos we read both offer a Dragon Bonus. One pays 4 to 1 on a win by 6 or 7 points; the other pays 6 to 1 for 7 points and 4 to 1 for 6. Same name, different paytable. Read the placard or the info screen.
  4. Reading the scoreboard as a forecast. Mini tables show the same roads as the big ones. They record the shoe; they do not predict it. Our Big Road page explains why.
  5. Choosing player for no reason. At a classic table banker is the cheaper side, commission included. The banker or player comparison runs the numbers.

The table rules come from the studio or the software. The casino decides what happens to your balance: its licence, how it checks ID and how it pays out. The list below is sorted by our score, which weighs exactly those written rules. We do not claim that any casino below carries a particular studio or table; check its live lobby.

Questions and answers

Is mini baccarat the same game as big baccarat?

Yes. The draw rules, payouts and eight-deck shoe are the same in the casino guides we read. The table, the staff and who handles the cards are different.

Can you touch the cards in mini baccarat?

No. The dealer turns over all the cards. The rules for Maryland casinos say players may not touch or handle them; card handling by the biggest bettor belongs to midi and big-table games.

Why is mini baccarat faster?

One dealer runs the whole round without passing the shoe or waiting for a slow reveal. An industry estimate by Bill Zender puts mini at 50 to 60 decisions an hour against 35 to 50 for squeeze games.

Does a faster table mean worse odds?

No. Banker still costs 1.06% of each stake and player 1.24%. A faster table costs more per hour only because you make more bets in that hour.

Is online baccarat closer to mini or to the big table?

Most online tables play like mini: the software or the studio dealer handles every card and you only pick a side. Squeeze tables online slow the reveal down again.
