The only real decision in baccarat is which side to back. Banker wins slightly more often because it draws after player; the casino takes 5% of banker wins to balance that. Here is the arithmetic behind both bets, and the tables where the answer changes.
Win probabilitiesThe commissionWhen player is better
Banker and player are almost mirror images. The same cards, the same totals, the same goal of getting closer to 9. The one difference is order: player's hand is settled first, and banker's third-card rule then reacts to what player drew. That reaction is worth a little over one percentage point in win rate, and the commission exists to take it back.
The probabilities
Eight decks, standard punto banco rules:
| Result | Probability | Excluding ties |
|---|---|---|
| Banker wins | 45.86% | 50.68% |
| Player wins | 44.62% | 49.32% |
| Tie | 9.52% | — |
Banker and player bets push on a tie: your stake stays on the table or comes back. So the fair comparison is the right-hand column. Banker wins 50.68% of decided hands.
Turning probability into edge
Player bet, paid 1 to 1:
- win 44.62% × 1 = +0.4462
- lose 45.86% × 1 = −0.4586
- expected result: −1.24% of the stake.
Banker bet, paid 0.95 to 1:
- win 45.86% × 0.95 = +0.4357
- lose 44.62% × 1 = −0.4462
- expected result: −1.06% of the stake.
Without the commission, banker would return +1.24% to the player. The 5% commission removes that and leaves the house a small margin.
What 0.18% is worth
| Stake per hand | Hands | Banker cost | Player cost | Difference |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| $10 | 100 | $10.60 | $12.40 | $1.80 |
| $25 | 300 | $79.50 | $93.00 | $13.50 |
| $100 | 500 | $530 | $620 | $90 |
Small per hand; real over a long session. There is no reason to give it away on a classic table.

Where player becomes the better bet
The answer flips when banker is paid differently.
| Table | Banker pays | Banker edge | Player edge | Better bet |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Classic | 0.95 to 1 | 1.06% | 1.24% | Banker |
| No commission | 1 to 1, but 1 to 2 when banker wins with 6 | about 1.46% | 1.24% | Player |
| EZ-style | 1 to 1, push when banker wins with a three-card 7 | about 1.02% | 1.24% | Banker |

Does the number of decks matter?
Barely. With eight or six decks the edges are the same to two decimals. With a single deck, banker drops to about 1.01% and player rises to about 1.29%. Live and RNG tables at crypto casinos almost always use six or eight decks.
Does the shoe change the odds as it is dealt?
Slightly. Every card removed shifts the probabilities a fraction. Studies of card counting in baccarat found the shifts too small and too rare to overcome the edge on banker or player. Live shoes are also cut well before the end, which removes the deepest part of the shoe where shifts are largest. For practical play, each hand is a fresh 45.86 / 44.62 / 9.52 split.
Streaks and switching sides
A run of six banker wins does not make player due, and it does not make banker "hot". The probabilities of the next hand are essentially unchanged. Switching sides after streaks does no harm on a classic table beyond paying 0.18% more on the player hands; it does no good either. See Big Road for why streaks look meaningful.
The tie, briefly
The tie wins 9.52% of hands. At 8 to 1 that is an edge of 14.36%; at 9 to 1, 4.84%. Both are many times the cost of banker or player. Details on the tie bet page.
Summary
- Classic table: banker, 1.06%.
- No-commission table with the 6 rule: player, 1.24%.
- Never the tie as a routine bet.
Questions and answers
Is banker or player better in baccarat?
Banker, on a classic table with a 5% commission: its house edge is about 1.06% against 1.24% for player. On a no-commission table where a banker win with 6 pays half, player is better.
Why does banker win more often?
Banker acts second. Its third-card rule takes the player's third card into account, which lets it draw or stand in the situations where that helps it most.
Why is there a commission on banker?
Without it, banker would have a positive expectation for the player. The 5% commission on banker wins turns that into a house edge of about 1.06%.
