Real baccarat strategy is short: pick the bet with the lowest edge, pick the table whose rules keep it low, and size your stake to your budget and pace. Betting systems promise more. This page shows, with numbers, why they cannot deliver it.

Baccarat strategy has an honest version and a hopeful one. The honest version fits on a card: the right bet, the right table, the right stake. The hopeful version is a betting system that claims to turn a negative game positive. This page covers both.
The honest strategy
1. The bet
| Table rule | Best bet | Edge |
|---|---|---|
| 5% commission | Banker | 1.06% |
| Banker 6 pays half | Player | 1.24% |
| Banker three-card 7 pushes | Banker | about 1.02% |
Never the tie at 8 to 1 (14.36%). Side bets only as a separate, small entertainment budget. Details on banker or player and tie bet.
2. The table
- A classic table over no-commission, if you prefer banker.
- A standard pace over speed, if you want the session to last. See speed baccarat.
- Limits that fit your stake, with room above.
3. The stake
Decide what you are willing to lose in a session, then size the stake so that the expected cost is a fraction of it, leaving room for swings:
| Budget | Hands planned | Banker stake | Expected cost | Room for swings |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| $200 | 100 | $10 | $10.60 | large |
| $200 | 200 | $10 | $21.20 | large |
| $200 | 100 | $50 | $53 | small: four losing hands in a row take $200 |
Why systems fail
Every system changes the size and order of bets. None changes the odds of a hand. The total expected loss is always the total staked times the edge.
Martingale
Double after each loss; return to the base after a win. From $10:
| Losses in a row | Next bet | Total lost |
|---|---|---|
| 3 | $80 | $70 |
| 5 | $320 | $310 |
| 6 | $640 | $630 |
| 7 | $1,280 | $1,270 |
Six banker losses in a row, ignoring ties, happen about 1.4% of the time from any starting point. In 200 hands, the chance of meeting at least one such run is roughly three in four. When it arrives, you need $640 to win back $630 plus $10, or the table maximum stops you first.

Reverse Martingale and Paroli
Double after a win, return to the base after a loss or after three wins in a row. Losses stay small; wins come in occasional bursts. The total staked, and so the expected loss, is set by how many hands you play and the edge.
1-3-2-6
Bet 1, 3, 2, 6 units after consecutive wins; restart after any loss. A neat way to bank part of a streak. It does not change the edge on any of the bets.
Fibonacci and d'Alembert
Gentler progressions after losses. Slower to blow up than Martingale, and for the same reason no better over time.

Pattern betting
Following the Big Road, betting on chops, or riding dragons treats past results as a signal. They are not. Analyses of card removal found its effect on banker and player far too small to exploit, and the Big Road carries less information than the cards. See Big Road.
Card counting
Removal of particular ranks shifts the odds of banker, player and especially the tie by tiny amounts late in a shoe. Simulations of counting systems found that opportunities on the main bets are too rare and too small to overcome their edge, and live shoes are cut well before the end. For side bets the picture is slightly different on paper, but the practical gains are negligible at online tables.
What a session realistically looks like
At $25 on banker for 100 hands, the expected loss is about $26.50. A typical session lands anywhere from a few hundred dollars down to a few hundred up, because the swing of 100 even-money bets is far larger than the edge. That is the game: short-term luck around a small, steady cost.
Stop rules that help
- A loss limit, set before you start, at an amount you can afford.
- A time limit, because pace drives cost.
- A win goal, if it helps you leave while ahead. It does not change the odds, but it can protect a good evening.

Questions and answers
What is the best baccarat strategy?
Bet banker on classic tables and player on no-commission tables, skip the tie and most side bets, play at a pace and stake your budget can carry, and stop at a set loss or time.
Does Martingale work in baccarat?
It wins small amounts often and loses large amounts occasionally. The losses come from runs of losing hands that are more common than they look, and table limits stop the doubling. Over time the house edge applies as usual.
Can you count cards in baccarat?
In theory card removal shifts the odds slightly. In practice the shifts are too small and too rare to overcome the edge on banker or player, and live shoes are cut early.
